County Fairs have changed a lot over the years, but they’re still an enormous amount of fun and diversion. Even if you’re not much of a rides person, like me, there’s plenty to see and do… and eat. I love watching the kids groom their animals for showing. I’m guessing some of them sleep there, in the pens. And I’ll always have a soft spot for the racing pigs.
I’m thrilled to see the agricultural displays and competitions coming back into prominence and I’d encourage you to check out the categories for competition and consider entering. It really is a fun way to get a little more gratification out of your efforts. Just go to your fair’s website and look for the competition booklet, for categories and assorted rules. Then look for your best cuke, or dahlia, or arrangement and start coddling it. Sure, it helps to start earlier in the season, but you’ve got to start somewhere.
